Pre-Masters (International Incorporated Masters)

Our Pre-Masters (IIM) is offered over one or two terms and focuses on equipping you with the academic English language skills you need to complete your postgraduate study at the Edinburgh Napier University. After successfully completing the programme you will continue onto you chosen postgraduate degree course at Edinburgh Napier University.

It is designed for students who do not qualify for direct entry to the master’s programmes at the University, this could be because of the grades achieved in your bachelor’s degree; your current qualifications are not equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or because you have a different background.

Provision overview

The one term IIM pathway allows you to build on your earlier studies in higher education in your own country or elsewhere and so prepare yourself for study on an appropriate taught masters at Edinburgh Napier University. You also enhance your English language capabilities, develop graduate study skills appropriate to the UK Higher Education environment and acclimatise to living and studying in another country and a cultural context very different from your own.

This pathway offers a blend of content modules with a clear focus on subject areas related to your destination master’s programme with language and academic study skills tuition. The content modules are normally set at Levels 7, 8 and 10 and students working towards completion of the pathway are able to acquire 60 credits in a term of study. If you successfully complete the pathway, you will have met the requirements set by the University and are able to move onto your chosen master’s programme increased confidence in both language and study skills and subject knowledge.

Common Modules

The module stresses the critical importance of English language competence in all four language skills areas within an academic context and provides English language preparation for continuing academic study on the later stages of a taught master’s programme. Apart from the formal language required for master’s study, the module focusses om the advanced study skills required, for example, taking responsibility for your studies as an independent learner, becoming a reflective learner and developing your ability to research effectively, think critically, write and present appropriately and abide by good academic practice.

30 Credits

The aim of the course is to introduce you to the structure, demands and expectations of postgraduate study across a range of subject disciplines in the UK. There is an emphasis on the development of advanced academic skills of particular relevance to study at postgraduate level and students are introduced to learning strategies that will be of benefit with particular emphasis on the VLE and the role of IT and of the Internet and specialist sites and journals that may be accessed digitally. Students will be helped to become more reflective and self-evaluative and to develop group working and team building skills.

This module enables you to engage in a substantial piece of individual research and/or product development work focused on a topic relevant to your subject discipline. The topic may be drawn from a variety of sources including: – prior work experience, discussions with peers’ research groups or a subject of personal interest. The project topic will be assessed for suitability to ensure sufficient academic challenge and can be satisfactorily supervised by an academic member of staff. Students will also be supported in considering whatever ethical issues may be raised by their choice of research topic and method. Selecting an appropriate topic and project managing the research and reporting processes are key elements in the assessment of your work.
