The International Year One course at Bangor University International College offers a combination of first-year university subjects and English language and academic study skills.

Core Modules

In this module you will develop and apply academic and study skills, including the skills of synthesising source material, presenting analysis and production of a final extended research essay with bibliography, and the delivery of a group-based presentation.

This module provides an understanding of a range of activities associated with corporate, operational, functional aims, objectives, strategies and strategic decision making. Topics include tactical decision making, operational management, human resource management or managing people, organisational structures, managing change, and the relationship between management, shareholders, and other stakeholders.

In microeconomics you will examine the workings of the free-market economy, and see how economic decisions in respect of the allocation of scarce resources are shaped by market forces through the interactions between demand and supply. Production and cost theory, and the economic theory of the firm are examined, and you will debate the role of government in safeguarding the interests of consumers and producers, promoting competition, and improving efficiency.

This module introduces mathematics and statistical techniques that are essential for further study in business, finance and economics. You will learn how to solve mathematical equations and use mathematics as a tool for decision-making in business, management and finance. You will learn how to describe data using graphical and numerical methods, and use probability to describe situations of uncertainty.

This module introduces students to basic mechanics and processes of management accounting theory and practice in sourcing information, fundamental analysis, communication, and use of decision-relevant information to generate and preserve value. With these skills, students will develop dynamic solutions and formulate business strategies.

This module emphasizes the importance of efficient management and exploring opportunities beyond existing resources in understanding the interconnectedness between management, enterprises, and entrepreneurship. It aims to enhance students’ comprehension of fundamental concepts, facilitating their success at Bangor Business School.

The module helps students familiarise themselves with accounting terminology and fundamental concepts, pick up accounting as a business language, and enhance their employability. It also introduces a basic accounting technique, record keeping, accounting rules and how the profession is governed and evolves over time.
