Degree Overview

Learn how to work with others to help them achieve their goals and potential on our unique undergraduate degree and take your first step towards a rewarding career in counselling, psychotherapy, and the wider helping professions. Our BSc Therapeutic Psychology combines our well-established strengths in counselling, psychology, mental health and therapeutic training. It also includes the option of a one-year paid work placement. The content you’ll study reflects current professional practice for working therapeutically with clients as well as an understanding of the ways to manage mental health difficulties. This gives you a solid start if you wish to pursue a career in counselling and psychotherapy. You’ll learn from leading psychologists and counselling experts and practitioners, who enthusiastically bring their real-life experience into the classroom. Working with them, you will develop a range of skills designed to develop your theoretical understanding of the main therapeutic approaches and their application and build your practical experience and personal development. As you progress through your degree, you’ll develop an advanced understanding of mental health issues and distress, learn skills related to professional client work, gain expertise in managing the counselling process, and develop reflexivity and self-awareness for your own future development as a practitioner. This well-rounded learning approach, alongside voluntary work experience, will give you a strong foundation for a career in helping professions or further education at postgraduate level. In joining Psychology at Roehampton, you will also have the opportunity to become a Mental Health England First-Aider, or train and develop skills in mental health first aid, further expanding your professional development. You’ll study different therapeutic models and approaches to counselling and psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), psychodynamic, and person-centred therapy. You’ll learn about psychological distress, how to support different population groups and communities, and how to work in different professional contexts. Teaching consists of a mixture of lectures, small group seminars and practice-based sessions. At least 50% of your teaching will be in seminars or practical workshops, allowing you to develop core therapeutic skills as well as giving you contact time with your lecturers.
