How to apply for a scholarship and where to find them

As an international university student looking to study in the UK, there are a number of opportunities available to you including scholarships. Before we go into the details, we’ll cover different types of support available to students, such as scholarships, grants and bursaries. We’ll also discuss where to find them, the application and selection process, and how to prepare for it.

1. Scholarships, bursaries, and grants – explained

There are a variety of scholarships, bursaries or grants available to international students looking to study at university level in the UK, each offering a unique opportunity for you to pursue your education goals. Some provide financial assistance to cover tuition costs, while others may offer assistance with living costs or books. No matter what type of scholarship a student chooses, it can be a great way to help them reach their educational goals beyond financial barriers.

1. Scholarships: Scholarships are awarded to students based on their academic achievements or excellence in their studies, sports or music. Often offered by universities, colleges, employers or organisations wanting to support young talent.
   1. Full Scholarships: these cover your tuition fees and living costs in full but are very competitive and usually go to high-achieving students.
   2. Part Scholarships: these can range from small, one-off payments to covering your full tuition fees. They do not usually include support for living costs.
   3. Course-specific Scholarships are for students who intend to study a particular course.
      Based on Nationality: depending on your Nationality, you might also find scholarships exclusive for students of a specific nationality.
2. Bursary: Bursaries are awarded to students based on low household income, background or personal circumstances, such as disabled students, etc. They’re often offered by universities, colleges, employers or organisations who want to support young talent. Bursaries help students with some of their living costs (one-off payment).
3. Grant: Finally, grants are based on low household income, background or personal circumstances and are awarded by charities or trusts representing underrepresented groups. Grants are meant to help cover living costs or specific expenses such as studying abroad (one off-payment).

   International students who decide to study at the International College of Dundee may be considered for a number of scholarships that recognise academic achievement while studying at the college. 3. How to Apply for Scholarships

Each scholarship will have its requirements, so it is essential to start early to have enough time to collect proof that you are eligible for the scholarship you want to apply for.

1. Start Early: Many scholarships have deadlines, so start your search as soon as possible.
2. Check the Requirements: Make sure you meet the requirements for the scholarship before applying. Your application is likely to be accepted if you meet all criteria.
3. Prepare Your Application: Scholarship applications often require essays, letters of recommendation, and transcripts. Make sure you have all the necessary documents and that they’re well-prepared.
4. Submit Your Application: Submit your application before the deadline. If you miss the deadline, you won’t be considered for the scholarship.
