International Foundation Programme - Law, Society and Social Justice

Our International Foundation Programme – Law, Society and Social Justice enables you to understand a range of areas to prepare you for your degree study. You will develop your communication skills whilst taking specific modules which include social and legal studies.

The International Foundation Programme (IFP) is a level 3 foundation year that is an equivalent qualification to A levels. During your programme you will develop subject-specific knowledge with a strong focus on improving your academic English language skills in preparation for studying at university.

During the three terms encapsulating the IFP, you’ll gain additional skills in your chosen study route and the necessary English language skills to progress to year one of your chosen university degree course.

BA (Hons) Social Work is taught on the Medway campus and BA (Hons) Journalism. You can travel between the Canterbury and Medway campus on a dedicated free shuttle bus, or you can choose to stay local to Medway. This module introduces theories of intercultural communication including the role played by verbal and non-verbal communication, stereotyping and the role of the media. You will consider barriers and develop strategies to ensure effective communication.

This module considers the origins and development of the discipline of sociology. It investigates a range of approaches, theories and interpretations that seek to explain how society operates, and to understand how these explanations inform the broader social sciences and theories of culture and communication.

This module will introduce politics in terms of key ideas, historical perspectives, and structures of government, drawing on Britain as a focus. It will also investigate how politics informs and is influenced by international considerations and relations.

This module will introduce the organisation and purpose of the English legal system. You will learn about key concepts, principles and personnel involved in the legal process.

This module will introduce and develop theories and definitions within the field of criminology before investigating sociological theories relating to the reasons for crime and the factors influencing those who undertake criminal activity.

This module introduces different modes of creative practice, practitioners and the factors that inform their creative work. Topics will include representation, cultural value, audiences, textual analysis, and the role played by artistic institutions and media.

This module takes a critical approach to the study of law. You will interrogate case studies, to better understand aspects of the English legal system.
