Overview

Our International Stage Two (IS2) in Mechanical Engineering is the first stage of your integrated BEng (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering or BEng (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering with Renewables degree course. You will be introduced to a wide range of Engineering principles including solid and fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, Engineering design software and Engineering control systems. You will also complete an Engineering project.

Upon successful completion of the IS2 programme you will continue your degree studies with the School of Science and Engineering.

What you will study?

Alongside core modules, you will study subject-specific modules that will equip you with a foundation of knowledge for your chosen field of study.

Subject Specific Modules

The module continues the development of the mathematics most relevant to engineers to extend students’ appreciation of the ways in which more advanced mathematical techniques aid problem solving and scenario modelling.

You are introduced to the basic principles, terminology and conventions of static mechanics and equipped to apply basic solid mechanics principles in the analysis and design of elements of engineering structures.

This module introduces you to fundamental principles, terminology and practical aspects of fluid mechanics. It equips you to apply basic theory to solve simple examples of fluid mechanics systems

You are introduced to thermodynamic principles of energy transfer involving heat, work, mass and general energy analysis covering concepts of heat transfer and its control with use of diagrams to represent thermodynamic properties and processes. You will use mathematical methods to analyse a system to estimate properties and results.

This module provides an understanding of the principles, terminology, and applications of electrical and electronic systems by providing an extended understanding of electrical circuits, components and instrumentation. It also introduces analogue and digital electronics and software for application in measurement and control systems.

This module provides you with an understanding of the principles, terminology, conventions and applications of the mechanics of machines and systems. You will apply the principles of classical mechanics to mechanical machines and systems to understand their operation and analyse their design.

This module provides an understanding of the basic principles, terminology and applications of control systems by introducing programmable controllers for engineering applications. It also develops logic and coding language skills for a common microcontroller and prepares students for further study of control systems engineering and related applications within industry.

This module introduces the skill sets required for the use of engineering design software packages. You will experience 2D and 3D design software applied to both the design process and as an embedded feature in development of products and systems. You will develop the use of major engineering software tools for use in engineering applications and across enterprises, preparing you for modern engineering within industry.

This module introduces, and appreciation for, manufacturing techniques and product fabrication methods. This includes background research of manufacturing techniques and processes used in product development, from a critical perspective (e.g. comparison of aluminium and carbon-fibre chasses) and a practical design and fabrication project, where the you will work in groups to use CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD) to design, assemble and test mechanical systems.
