First established in 1890 as Woolwich Polytechnic, the University of Greenwich today is a modern institution with strong links to business and an emphasis on helping students meet the demands of a fast-changing workplace.

To achieve this, the University offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees – many of which are designed specifically to meet the needs of international students.

Our three campuses in London and Kent include the Old Royal Naval College – a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Greenwich. Greenwich, London

One of the many reasons that students come to the University of Greenwich is its location, which offers the excitement and attractions of London coupled with the countryside charm of Kent.

London needs no introduction, a thriving global metropolis with something for everyone, the city is as famous for its retail, restaurants, architecture and culture as it is for Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. Whether it’s science, history, art, design or fashion that interest you, London has a huge range of world-class museums and galleries to explore – many of which are free!

Just outside London, the county of Kent boasts a wealth of scenic countryside and coastal resorts: tourist attractions include Leeds Castle and Canterbury Cathedral, and local towns have a range of shopping, entertainment and leisure on offer when you are taking a break from studying. Medway also has excellent links to the rest of the county, and the campus is close to the historic city of Rochester.

London has nearly 750 art galleries and museums – ranging from large institutions like the National Gallery, Tate Modern and Science Museum to small, specialist studios such as the Photographer’s Gallery near Leicester Square and the Theatre Museum in Covent Garden.

London offers everything from global artists performing in large stadiums to live bands playing in bars, pubs and clubs. International classical, opera and ballet stars also perform throughout the year at the Royal Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, Royal Opera House and Albert Hall.

London has a thriving and diverse theatre life, with major musicals and plays running in the West End as well as independent productions playing in local theatres across the capital.

From chain stores on Oxford Street and upmarket shops in Covent Garden, to open-air stalls and street markets throughout the city, London caters for every taste and budget. Further afield, Kent’s enormous Bluewater Shopping Centre is only a train ride away from Greenwich.

Campus

The University of Greenwich offers three contrasting campuses in southeast London and Kent, each with excellent facilities for work and play.

  • On Greenwich campus, you will find the Dreadnought Building, a historic façade with a 21st-century interior: think warehouse proportions with glass lifts, basement bar and gig area, plus ample space to study and socialise.
  • Free intercampus bus services to Avery Hill & Greenwich campuses
  • Greenwich campus is 25 minutes to central London
  • Avery Hill campus, in southeast London has excellent teaching and sports facilities. A £14 million investment has added two new buildings, four clinical skills laboratories and two floodlit, all weather sports pitches.
  • Avery Hill is also home to the Student Village, where most of our students live: the complex includes a canteen/café as well as a lively student bar and entertainment facilities.
  • Avery Hill campus is 30 minutes from Greenwich by bus
  • Medway campus (Kent) houses a huge library as well as industry-standard laboratories for science, engineering, pharmacy and natural resources disciplines. Teaching and living spaces are just a few minutes’ walk apart, while student life centres around The Deep End – a social space that hosts a huge range of events including comedy performances, concerts and quiz nights.

Greenwich Campus

The Greenwich campus offers a choice of there different halls of residence, all within easy walking distance of the University’s lecture halls and facilities.

Cutty Sark Hall

The Cutty Sark Hall offers 231 single study/bedrooms, all with en-suite shower/toilet facilities in shared, self-catering flats. Situated in the heart of Greenwich, it sits above the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) station among shops that are only a few minutes’ walk from the Greenwich campus.

McMillan Student Village

The McMillan Student Village offers a range of accommodation only 10-15 minutes’ walk from Greenwich town centre and Deptford High Street. The site accommodates students from a number of local colleges and features a large common room for the use of all residents.

Daniel Dafoe Hall

The Daniel Dafoe Hall is located next to the Greenwich rail and Docklands Light Railway station, approximately 15 minutes’ walk from Greenwich campus. I  includes 358 en-suite rooms for students in a mix of flatshares, studios and two-bedroom “studio-style” flats, as well as two student communal areas and a mini-gym for residents.

The Students’ Union is a democratic organisation run by students for students. As well as representing your rights and interests, the Students’ Union is at the heart of university life: you can play a sport, perform, campaign, volunteer for a cause, start your own group, or get even involved by serving on a committee or running for election. The Students’ Union also provides support and advice to help you have a great time at Greenwich, and we run a range of events and services to help you settle into student life once you arrive.

Sport plays a major part in university life at Greenwich. Whether you want to compete, play or just looking for a way to keep fit and have fun, you will find plenty of activities and team sports to get involved in.

Our students’ Union offers a huge range of sports clubs – from football, rugby, hockey and lacrosse, to archery, cheerleading, equestrian and Ultimate Frisbee – and the University invested £1.7m in all-weather floodlit sports pitches to ensure that teams have the best of facilities.
